Many of the arguments about XHTML are missing the point.

XHTML is basically useful because because

1. It can be used anywhere HTML is used.
2. The learing curve from HTML to XHTML is shallow.
3. XHTML is XML.

The last point is extreamly important. It means that if one authors in XHTML
one can use all the XML tools that are available to manipulate ones pages.
Further more pages authored in XHTML can be converted by proxy servers to
forms suitable for small devices, television, phones, voice browsers etc.

Further more all the upcoming standards (W3C and otherwise) are compatible
with XHTML, but _NOT_ necessarily with HTML

If you really only want to write static web pages; if you do not want to
make use of the new interactive forms; if you don't care about b2b; if you
don't care a hoot about new standards; if you don't care whether your pages
are accessible or not; and if you really only want your pages to be viewable
on desktop computers, then don't bother making the switch.

However if you do care about writing pages that are truly universible, and
accessible, and if you do care about being able to leverage all the new
advances coming out in the internet world, then make the switch.
