off topic - email troubles

I apologise in advance for asking this off topic, but I'm very frustrated
with my email problems.  I had to stop using Outlook because it kept hanging
up when trying to open, so I went back to Outlook Express.  Everything seems
ok and I'm receiving email, except when anyone sends me a forward of another
letter, when I open the attachment it's blank.  I noticed the attachments
have the file ending .eml, which I've never seen before.  I know it must be
something wrong in my options, but I've been over them all and I can't
figure it out.  Does anyone here know what the problem setting might be?
