cgi-bin

hi list,

can someone give me a quick overview of what exactly i can do with the
cgi-bin?  each time i upload my files, i see the little folder of cgi-bin
and i know it is supposed to make my site better (or faster? with more
gizmos? ) but i just am not sure what it really does.  maybe for
javascripts?

please make the answer simple and less technical as i am not so familiar
with website developing terms.  i really don't see a need for it right now
but i am not really sure about that as what they say, what you don't know,
you don't miss...or something along that line....
