 I do that as well.  By funnelling someone to a similar page I keep the
customer and they never get a `404 no matter how old the page may be.  The
page in question comes up and says "DELETED PAGE redirecting......"   and
they get redirected in a couple of seconds.

 I started doing this when the Search Engines didn't get the word that a
page was deleted.  When the Internet was less than a million websites they
could keep up, I think they are hopelessly burried now.  Too many websites,
too many web pages to spider, too many add's and delete's.

 My problem was that if I just blindly deleted a webspage and told the
search engines, they didn't always delete the page.  Then the user came in
from a search engine, they would get dead-ended with a `404 and we would
loose a potential customer.
