Loading order for images

Here's something I've often wondered about. Does anyone know what exactly
dictates the order that a series of graphics will load? And how can it be
controlled in HTML? I have often noticed that a series of photos in columns
or rows will not load as I would expect, that being from first to last in
the order they were coded. Thanks!
