Fw: Masked Text Opacity

I have a graphic issue I need help with.  I have been asked to create an
orbiting text effect.  Using Macromedia Fireworks, I attached my text to an
elliptical path and created a mask:

My problem comes after I apply the mask.  The text becomes translucent, even
though the opacity of the object is set to 100%. In this illustration, I
have added a line around the characters as they are almost invisible
otherwise.  The line seems opaque, but the fill is not:

Graphics are not my primary specialty and this issue has been a sticking
point for over a day now.  Does anyone have ideas or suggestions for me?
