Yes, so my example did include some invalid JS. It was only meant as an
example of the problem I've been having, that example code didn't come
straight out of a problematic document.
I still always have this error, even with good JS and a valid <script> tag.

Looks like some problems with your quotes there, doesn't it? and extra
single quote in front of index?
That just might have something to do with something . . .
