What makes it much trickier to do? How is it trickier to put a column on
the right side of the page, rather than the left?

No, none. In fact, I personally think that a right-hand side menu is much
more natural for right-handed visitors to use. It also means that you can
keep the left-hand side free from all that navigational clutter, which
chokes the presentation of your content.
