This is one of the things that Fireworks is famous for.  You use Fireworks
to create the buttons and the drop down menus and it creates the appropriate
JavaScript for you.  It allows you to control where the menus are, what
colors they are and where you want that menu link to go.

I believe they have a 30 day trial version if you want to give it a try.
It's at the Macromedia website.  The help file provides basic lessons that
work their way up to creating menus this way.
