First a caveat. I am talking with the fervor of a convert!

It's a no brainer ... UNIX and IMO FreeBSD is the way to go server-side.

However as an ex-prof.  I realize that evangelical assertions probably won't
cut it with _your_ Prof. !

Pros of MS NT

    It is easier to administer (maybe!)
    Support (paid) is available
    MS has a credentialing program (MSIE)
    You can run M$ applications more easily (Costs you mega$ though)
    MS techchnologies are more easily available (You don't need them, there
are better alternatives, but if your boss has been swayed by MS marketing
they are there!)

Anti's of MS
    License Fee for OS
    Security a MAJOR problem
    security Patch's seem to take for ever to appear
    $$$$$$$
    You have to license everything Mail, + .NET + SQLServer can easily add
up to $100K (For 10 users)

Pros of FreeBSD/Linux/
    Free
    Secure
    Powerful
    Extensile
    Mail, fileservers, Apache etc. are all either included or easily ported.
    Patchs usually available within 24 hours of a problem appearing (This
demonstraes the power of the open source community!)

Antis
    Need someone who understands UNIX. (It's actually not that difficult,
just requires a different mindset to MS apps.)
    Paid support not available (but  there are numerous mailing lists)
    Limited support for MS technologies
