It's more attuned for the HWG-Business list, but there y'go!

This is where a good contract comes in, and serious explanation of the
conditions at negotiation time. I _always_ point out that it is my
normal practice to include a 'designers referral' button/link at the
foot of most pages I design; I counter the argument about selling my
goods verses Client goods, by arguing that I'm not in the same line of
business (e.g., Client is selling wholesale vegetable produce, when
I'm selling my services as a web site developer), which normally saves
arguments and time. Never the less, I made damn sure that a section in
the contract gave me the right to include such buttons, just in case.
I also, while I'm on the subject, included a section regarding
portfolio inclusion rights, to aid in getting further business; thus
far, Clients I have seem impressed that I'm covering some my future
advertising options. It's saved a lot of arguments and heartache, as
well.

keeping my link on his site.
See the above!

I can see both sides of the coin. Point out that you're not in the
same line of work (you aren't, are you?), and that should solve the
problem, if he's being reasonable.
Good luck!
