I've taken over management of existing sites and my solution is to leave the
"Designed by ... " link and ADD "Maintained by ..."

Seems to me it would be appropriate to request that the current web master
do something similar.  Credit where credit is due.

However...
I still feel that if the client has paid for the design, then the design is
theirs.  Just like any other piece of merchandise.
