Question about Photos

I have a client that I am designing a website for that sells framed designs.
An idea they would like me to put into reality is to have the website
visitor be able to browse a selection of frames and mattes and have a
preview of the design show up with that frame/matte/design combination.
Without having actual photos of all these various combinations, how can I do
this?  I have seen it done before with what looks like maybe PERL?  Any
ideas or suggestions on how I can do this?
