Yes, this is how it works on servers I'm familiar with: put an
.htaccess file in any directory and that directory, and all others
under it, are protected. The password file the .htaccess file
refers to can be located anywhere, and for safety's sake, it's best
to put it outside of the web root (i.e., the directory to which the
domain name points).
