fluid vs fixed-size layout

I've started the redesign of our corporate site, which uses a
fixed-width layout because the designers who did the last version
designed the entire thing in Flash, and I quickly evolved the site to
two parallel versions (Flash and non-Flash), and then eventually ditched
the Flash version entirely. But the Flash legacy of a fixed-width layout
remains.

Now that I'm embarking on a new design, I can go either way. I suspect
it might be somewhat easier (for me) to deal with a fixed-width design,
but I'm wondering what the rest of the world is doing, and why.
