Thanks Brian. It's this document that is the source of my confusion. =
It's
like reading the parts manual for a car engine, and trying to figure out =
how
the engine works.=20

And most of the "tutorials" on CSS I've found on the web are little more
than lists of links. "If you want to know about <this> go <here> and =
if
you want to know about <that> go <there>" . And when you follow those =
links
you're sent off somewhere else, without anyone actually explaining =
anything.
Whenever I try to learn about CSS on the web, I end up with about 20 =
browser
windows open and still not knowing what it was I started out to learn. =
 I
even followed the major opus at
http://www.westciv.com.au/style_master/house/index.html which explains
everything about CSS, without having a clue about CSS positioning or =
that
question I asked originally, even after reading it 5 times.

I think anyone writing about CSS is either forced to write in convoluted
gobbldegook or chooses to do so, but the end result is I read for 4 =
hours
and end up understanding nothing.

I'm very grateful to Marten Gallagher who is the first person to give me =
a
concise and readable answer to that question.=20
