password protected pages

I hope this is the right forum.

I have a site that wants to have public and private pages.  It is an alumni
site and they want to maintain their dues to help support the site yet let
all alumni access general pages.  I want to put the newsletter online and
enable access to member info through password protected pages that only
members can see.  Can anyone point me to either a tutorial, program or
service that can help me do this.  Or is there anyone out there that would
be interested in contracting to set this up?
