Just to clear a few little things up... You do not have to cd anywhere to do
a traceroute. It is a program in the %system_root% folder and will therefore
run from whatever directory you happen to be in. Also, the DOS version has a
few flags that might be helpful:
Usage: tracert [-d] [-h maximum_hops] [-j host-list] [-w timeout]
target_name
Options:
-d Do not resolve addresses to hostnames.
Normally it takes the traceroute quite a while to do this, and if you don't
care about the names of all the servers/routers it's hitting, use this and
it will only display the computer's IP address.
-h maximum_hops Maximum number of hopes to search for
target_name.
Example: -h 50 will go through 50 computers before giving up. default is 30.
-j host-list Loose source route along host-list. Frankly I don't
know what this one does :-) perhaps someone can enlighten us?
-w timeout Wait timeout milliseconds for each reply. Pretty
self-explanatory, no?
Example: -w 300 will display Request Timed Out if the computer in question
can't send a reply ping in under 300 ms.
If you have a UNIX box of any sort, the like command is traceroute and has a
few more options.
Hope that helps your tracing!
Nathan

You can do a TRACEROUTE by simply going to the DOS black-screen, cd.. until
you have a C:\> prompt, then type in [tracert IP.ADD.RES.S] (without the
square brackets and use the numbers for the IP address or the
www.whatever.com/net/org/etc.) and it will give you all the information you
desire without using a fancy (or expensive) tool/program. HTH
