It doesn't suprise me as to how much some of these people "don't" know. I
can't tell you how many calls I get from those misfortunate, that dont' know
anything, and have had a designer, that litterally took them for granted,
and how frustrated they are with the whole internet.
Part of the problem is.. they get suckered into the web by claims from
those who say oh you need a website, you can make a killing off the web.
Well you know.. if done right, a website can definately help enhance what
they already have. But they go in with high expectations.. then they are
told they need this and that, and spend a fortune on unnecessary garbage,
and end up with a money pit. I get a call, this customer is frustrated,
their site is doing nothing, they have spent all this money, and what do we
do. We don't know what to do, we don't understand terminology, we just want
it to work. I have seen this so much, and realize, that people can't make
an informed decision about their needs if they are clueless. I try to
explain as much as I can to them, and send them to where they can learn
basics. I explain to them, that I will help them straighten out their web
problems, but they also have to do their homework on their part.
Tell them this.. you wouldn't buy a horse if you didn't know how to care
for it right? Well you need to buy this book... (intenet for dummies comes
to mind), and read it so you can understand what your site does, and how the
internet works. For that matter, it wouldn't hurt to buy them the book and
give it to them and then just include the price in the site.
Their questions may be dumb, to you.. because you know this stuff.. but for
those who get on the internet, and dont' know what to do.. it is a real
problem. Remember you were once a newbie yourself.
