popup user surveys?

I've been on some sites where, when I attempt to leave, I get a popup
window asking me to complete a little user satisfaction survey.

What do you all think about that approach? I always feel like I'm
being hijacked, but are they effective? Are there better ways to try
to find out if your users have gotten what they wanted from your site?
