'push' pages

I remember reading about 'push' pages way back, and are assuming they are
similar to creating a 'channel' , as MS calls it, in that the server pushes
info out to the client, as opposed to the client having to request it.  I
have a possible new
client that dropped their last developer because they resisting implementing
push pages.

Can someone give me the basic overview of what push pages are and methods to
implement, or have some links I can read up on it?
