Actually, it makes loading a touch slower, as the tables need to be
drawn...:). It has the advantage, however, of creating the illusion of
faster loading because there's activity on the page as the pieces appear.
It also allows the lareger images to contain rollovers and similar effects.

I always see large images broken up and placed in tables to put them back
together.
Why is this done? I am guessing to speed loading?
