IE's progress bar

I'm hoping someone has run into this before ... MSIE 5.5, pages with
JavaScript on them ... the progress bar does not indicate that the page is
fully loaded even though it is.  Here is what Microsoft says about it:

"To work around this problem if you are building pages that use JavaScript
functions to retrieve page data, keep the user informed of what the browser
is doing by updating the progress bar with messages throughout your script.
When all of the information has been retrieved, inform the user through the
progress bar."

That's fine, I can do that ... if I could find out how to manipulate the
progress bar via JavaScript.  Anyone know how?
