Link Length problem under IE5.5?

I have a link on a page that is dynamically populated from a database. The
link launches a perl program that interprets the passed data from the link.
The link can get quite long and recently stopped working for some users with
a large amount of passed data; they click on the link and nothing happens.
Strangely enough, if you right-click on the link and choose "open in new
window", it works fine.
I have been able to replicate the problem on a machine running IE5.5 and NT.
However, it does not occur under IE5 (Win98), NS4.6 (Win98), NS6PR2 (win98),
NS4.72 (NT), NS6PR1 (NT). Methinks I have an IE5.5 bug.
Any ideas?
