I think what you want can be done, but it becomes necessary to rethink the
way you use positioning...

If you made the central div - "content" - relative, you could still use
absolute positioning within it to place your columns if that was required.

It looks that way.  At least if you are trying to create a tableless page in
CSS, using three or four columns, and you want the footer to stretch across
those columns but appear at the bottom of the page (the "actual" bottom,
after the user scrolls through the content, not the faux bottom of the
browser window).

At first I thought I was going nuts, that surely with the large movement
toward a tableless environment, you could do something as simple as a footer
in CSS.  Wrongo.

Found this article, which vividly illustrates what I ran up against.  And
nearly everyone on the Internet looking for the same answer I am, came back
to this one article.  (sigh)
