Subject: RE: (compile) FTP

Question: My automatic feature in the FTP program I have isn't working
correctly. I already checked and it doesn't work in my new computer either.
What files should go under ascii in the default?

Thanks everyone for these answers:

=======

Ascii

.pl and .cgi (perl files)(must be ascii or won't work)

.htm, .html, .shtm, .shtml (will also work with binary, but harder to tweak
with notepad if you do)

.txt, .css, .shtml, .shtm, .php, .csv, .dat (usually) and anything else you
CAN open in Wordpad (or vi) and read.

Binary

.gif

.jpg

.pdf

=======================

In general, the best approach is to use binary for anything except for

text files. HTML, PHP, ASP, CGI, Perl, Text are all text files. Raw data

are stored in binaries. Some are more sensitive than others. For

example, PDFs and DOCs are not as sensitive to being uploaded as ASCII

as a GIF or JPG.

The litmus test really is to test what it looks like in a text editor.

If funny characters are displayed, then almost definitely it is a

binary.

This should cover what you need. :-)

=============

All compiled stuff goes bin -- like word docs, all pictures and the likes.
Ascii is for the non-compiled stuff -- text, scripts, cgi. You can transfer
text as binary so the rule of thumb is if you don't know transfer binary.
