.css file

I am working in my first ever .css page.
I have been trying to get the graphic bg to work, but it looks like it is
being uploaded in ASCII instead of binary (the bg graphic)  COde is as
follows::


body         { color: #000080; background-color: #C0C0C0; background-image:
               url('background.gif') }

Can anybody explain how this si done?? The bg is in the proper file, and
when I uploaded  it it looked like a mess!
