I agree with the volume of opinions - digital is the way to go.

I did a (colourful) data-driven site a few years back for a local gallery.
They just upload their stuff using Dundas and a small back-end admin page
(browse their drive, select the image, add the artist info and price and hit
submit).

Almost all the pics were taken using an old Sony Mavica which had a max res
of 800x600

The art shows up just fine for web: http://www.artsource.co.za/
