the solution isn't necessarily obvious, but it's simple   ;o)

you need something inside the "fixed" cell to prop it open as wide as you
want, then "overload" the TD widths on the liquid cells

voila --

i center the cell contents so that you can see more easily that the outer
cells are balanced

the two widths of 800 expand and contract just as desired -- netscape uses
the table width of 100% as an overriding factor

i use a red "one pixel" gif to test, then switch to clear for the live site

(that is, if i were still doing table layouts)

this works in netscape 4.08 at all window sizes, even extremely narrow ones
