>>>In award-winning web pages, so said by others of greater knowledge and
experience than I, the essential elements of the rule of thirds and/or the
golden mean is quite apparent to the trained eye. Of course, when you read
the bios of many of these designers, they come from apprenticeships within
photography, graphics and other design areas. Obviously such skills are
readily transferred to the web.<<<

I am finding all this quite fascinating, Dennis, and so your soapbox is safe
from me.

It has been my contention when teaching, and when learning, that there is no
end to the new subjects and technologies that will need to be mastered
(well, at least explored) in the near future for those wishing to remain
competitive in this business.

I will stipulate that (IMHO), the visual design of the site is any more
important than the programming behind that design, the engineering of the
user interface, or the knowledge of the operating system that runs it.
Taken together, the factors are currently reaching a level of complexity far
beyond what any one person can manage to master. Fortunately, this may get
better (at least with regard to the simple publishing of documents) once XML
is widely accepted. In any case, one of my pet peeves is a shop that
focuses on only one factor of the overall design flow, and then publicizes
themselves as generally "superior"...

You've made some valid points, Dennis...I would be interested in learning of
any online resources you might recommend for further study...??
