I still code by hand, too...:).
I wonder if tables would be easier to code than CSS if you had learned CSS
first as the up-and-coming generation of designers will do...?

BTW, I still code by hand. Much more efficient and
reliable than WYSIWYNeverQuiteGetRight.
Tables are much easier to code by hand than pages
involving CSS.
