Are you uploading the images in Binary mode?
Across the bottom of WS-FTP are three radio fields:
ASCII (text) - Binary - Auto
I think I remember finding "Auto" not always reliable.
For text based files (HTML, perl, php,etc.) Choose "ASCII"
For images (et. al.) Choose Binary
