>>>It's up to you whether you want to use all CSS for this, but given the
way browsers handle it, I really don't think there's a good solution for
specifying font sizes in CSS. Either you get wildly varying results up to
and including unreadability, which is bad, or you have to specify absolute
sizes, which is worse.<<<
Thank you jeanne, and all...
It seems to me that I a) need to go with stylesheets to continue our
expansion into the dynamic sites market, and b) can not accept that either
Mac users or those needing control of their font sizes will be excluded.
Our policies for the next 6-12 months:
* On static pages in the rare occasions where no programatical solution is
possible, we will try to maintain a standard of .9em or higher. Smaller
text, where the client may require a smaller size, will be set with pixel
measurements. I will not use this for anything crucial to conveying the
document's message. Copyright information is an example.
* Our preferred solution will be to programatically select a style sheet
that uses larger font settings for Macs, as well as for any other situations
where it might be required. Perhaps I should phrase that as "select a style
sheet that uses smaller fonts for Windows"...:).
Since dynamic pages are built programatically anyway, and 99% of our other
work is in PHP-enabled environments, I feel this will suffice to get us
through the next year.
This has been a very informative thread, and I appreciate all the help.
