Do not add a number.  That is an email username trick and not something
appropriate for domain names.

Pluralizing the name is also unacceptable.  People will type in the singular
version anyway and thus end up at the other site and your client looses the
business.

One solution is to hyphenate the name:

business-name.com

Another is to add something to the name that allows it to be unique.  For
instance, if your client is incorporated:

businessnameinc.com

Or, you can use a domain based on the client's slogan or on a generic but
memorable reference to the business:

BestBuyInTown.com
NumberOne2003.com
YouWillBeSatisfied.com

UsedOfficeFurniture.com
AutoRepairAndService.com


Don't sell your client cheaply by taking the fast way out - spend some time
thinking up a workable, memorable domain that will fit in with the business
marketing plan.

I have a client who wants me to do their site. She is getting ready to
purchase a domain name. Her business is a two word name and right now,
that name is taken. She is agonizing over how to get around this. If
she adds the number "2" at the end of it (businessname2.com) that is
not taken. But, she wonders about the feasibility of having a number
appear in a domain name. Good, bad, no one does it?? She can add an "s"
and pluralize the name (businessnames.com) but that is not really the
name of her business, although it works. Which is preferable? Adding
the number or making the domain name the plural of the business name?
Both of those are available for purchase.
