What language is your shopping cart written in? Using something like
Authorize.net, the details of a transaction are linked to them via a secure
connection. Authorize.net then processes the card and charges it if it's
valid. They then return an code, something like 0=transaction ok, 1=card
denied, 2=card expired, etc. You could then take the response that is sent
back from Authorize.net and route the visitor to the appropriate page
(thankyou, or we're sorry but...). On the thankyou page ONLY (a successful
transaction), you then have the statement to append the order to the
database.

Authorize.net is just one example of a payment solution. I don't know, or
think that Paypal operates in the same manner.

GK

I do the website (in my spare time) for my kids swim team... They want to be
able to sign up/pay for meets online...

Typically a meet runs three days,
the coach needs to know -- Day of event, Event #, Event Description, Best
time of swimmer
each event costs $1.50
you can enter up to 3 events per day (there are usually 3 days of events)
for each meet there are 2 different "splash" fees that never change
no tax

All I really need is to be able to send a total to a service such as Paypal
or other and have them handle the money part....I can gather the rest into a
database for reporting and etc for the coaches....
BUT I don't want an entry entered into the database until it's
PAID...payment is accepted... it is a confirmed "sale" etc...

I suppose I could have them fill it out and then put it in a holding area
that they have to come back into and confirm with an invoice number or
something to that effect, but is there a simpler way?

The team tried an honor system entry online where the parents would pay
directly or be billed... This past month they had $7,000 outstanding meet
fees, so that's gone.

Is this hard or easy? Can someone point me in an easy direction?
