Set the background-color style element to transparent, like this

<textarea rows="5" cols="50" name="message" style="background-color:transparent"></textarea>

It works for IE 4+ and NN 4+ (theoretically).

Hello people!

Ok, I want to change the colour of a textbox from white to clear - is this
possible?  I'd also need to do that for a big textbox.
