hi andre
yes
fewer columns on the page
but that solution is usually not good enough for whoever is designing the
page -- "usability be damned, i want every last pixel occupied by good
data, so make the headers vertical, dammit!! but don't let it scroll!!!"
little do these types realize that it's gonna scroll anyway...
another suggestion is to use A, B, C, etc., as column headings, and then
place a legend under the table of data --
A= this year's consolidated earnings before tax and unusual items
B= last year's net profits after accounting for the president's bonus
C= ratio A/B to the price of tea in china
you also mentioned that "there are going to be more columns added for quite
some time (until the product is stabilized)"
who decides that all users want all columns? why not offer the users a
<select multiple> list of columns they can pick?
i'm sorry if i come across as unhelpful, but rotating text 90 degrees
sounds like a technological solution in search of a design problem
i think your best bet is to investigate why there has to be so many columns
on the page
