Actually, Perl is rooted in the Unix shell scripting tradition and it only 
reads like Latin to folks who are used to the C-style heritage.

Although I now use PHP most, I came to it through Perl and I still find the 
latter to be more handy for quick command-line scripts and often for those 
to be run via cron. Before I started with PHP, though, I write entire 
site-management systems using MySQL and object-oriented Perl and I had some 
very clean, neat and concise scripts in place...:).

Hello all,

I'm curious about the numbers of you using/creating PERL scripts.  For
many years I've compared PERL to Latin - a language nobody uses except
to decipher an ancient text.  It seems to me that nearly every web host
offers better, non-cgi alternatives - PHP, ASP, ColdFusion, etc.

Do people still use PERL extensively?  Why?
