width=auto,height=auto?? do you know offhand which platforms interpret
this as meaning fully maximized?
and what happens if javascript is off? the way you've coded the href,
absolutely *nothing* happens, which, to put it politely, is rude to the
users

jeremy, there is no "best" way -- there is *no* way to guarantee it
besides, opening a second window is problematic from an
accessibility/usability point of view
again, for many internet users, it is rude
