For a start you want to learn at least one language. Once you have learnt
one if you need to learn others they will come quite easily.

In you case as you have made a start on VB you shold stick with it for now.
It's a great language to start off in, and you can easily become a VB
programmer (The most common of all programming languages). However because
you want to get into the 'web' career field I would however recommend that
rather than just learn VBScript you learn ASP and VBScript. Pay particular
attention to how to DataBase program, because most modern websites are
database driven.(Beginning ActiveServer Pages 3 from Wrox press is a good
way to start and also have a look at one of my web pages

As for client side web scripting all web page scripting should be in
JavaScript as this is supported on nearly all browsers. Even IE for Macs
does not support VB script! (As far as I can see looking at most of our web
page writers, you don't actually have to know much JavaScript for client web
pages, you just have to know enough to understand the scripts that you are
going to beg borrow or steal:>))

It really depends who you go to work for. Independant shops will all have
their own way of doing things, and may use ASP,ColdFusion, PHP, or JSP or
CGI/Perl. If you have one language you should have no difficulty picking up
the others.

There have been numerous discussions on this list about the relative merits
of any of the above, but they all get the job done. However probably there
are more Jobs available for ASP/VB programmers than other Languages.

About a year back Java Programmers were in very short supply, but the
dot.com crash has released thousands of Java Programmers on to the market.
