Aline gave same excellent advise on this one. Take it.
I was in the same predicament as you a while back - and took the same steps.

What I did was this.
I bought a bunch of top - shelf magazines.
Ones that had cool eye-grabbing ads in them by Name companies.
I looked through the mag. and marked the places where the ads grabbed my
attention.
I had all my stuff (content, etc.) ready - so believe it or not
I got a bunch of crayons and blank paper and made a mock - up of what the
front page / magazine ad / cover of book or magazine = Index Page =
/index.html
with my crayons. Just simply copied the designs and stuff and put in my
content.
Then I had a stack.
Then I made more, by playing around  - switiching colors - switching sides
of the paper things were on, etc. Ideas were flowing like mad and I thought
that I was turning into an artsy-ad guy.
Anyway - I finally settled on one, but now I have buches of ideas in my book
= something to show.
Get to it + It's more fun than you'd think!
