Redefine Back Button

Hi folks,

My roommate came across a site that some how redefined the back button so
that when it was clicked it took you to another page on the site.  I'd like
to know how this was done.  Normally I'd just look at the site and figure
out the code but my roommate wouldn't tell me the URL of the site (knowing
him it was probably a porn site or something far worse).
