Have you tried the language attribute instead the name?

I think this is supposed to be XHTML 1.0, IE, and Netscape compatible.

My reference (The Complete Reference: HTML 3rd ed) confirms that it is.

Last week, I requested information on where a newbie friend of mine
could go
to start learning HTML. He's been having a blast with all of your
suggestions and wants me to thank everyone for their input. So, thanks!

Now, after deciding to take the plunge into XHTML and finding it to be
not
as difficult as I thought, especially with help from Homesite 5's XHTML
validator and the W3C validator, I've talked another friend into
updating
his soon-to-be-released site to XHTML 1.0 Strict (which is what Homesite
validates to right now). He's more of a programmer than I am, so his
pages
include TONS of includes and Javascript functions, whereas mine don't.
My
pages were easy to upgrade, and for the most part, his are too, except
for
one niggly little detail: the NAME attribute in his FORM tags and one
IMG
tag. XHTML claims NAME to be invalid, but his Javascript breaks unless
it's
there. Does anyone have any suggestions about this? We've tried
replacing
NAME for ID, but that's not it, as Javascript is still breaking. I'm
sure
the answer has to do with how Javascript references these items as
opposed
to the XHTML code itself, but am not 100% certain of that. Outright
instructions or links to possible tips and/or guides would be helpful.
The
Specs for XHTML are vague to me, written a bit over my head, so things
written more in a plain English manner would be best, I think. The
scripts
in question are, as I said, for a soon-to-be-released site, so there's
unfortunately no URL to post, and the code (for just one page) is well
over
1000 lines in length (when recombined; he wrote it modularly), so
posting
the code in it's entirety would not do, either.
