I've always heard the opposite! One of the positioning 'secrets' has been to
submit your url via a link on another site. For example, post your link on a
free webpage, and then submit the url of the free webpage. I've always heard
that when you submit your own url it gets ranked lower than if the search
engine finds it own its own. Each search engine is different though.

Is it true that search engines do not 'spider' on their own? They can only
crawl URLs that are submitted?

I checked it in Netscape 4.7, and the links don't appear.  However, the
hidden items DID appear when I pointed my mouse at the area where the menu
should be.
