hello,
flash's popularity is growing. its versatile, downloads quick (depends
how you create the movie), streams, interactive (down to the developer),
can have streaming sound etc....
there are good and bad points to a flash site. but, alot of it is the
developers problem. the main one is not offering a standard HTML site as
well as the flash so that people can decide. AND let everyone know the
download size of the flash movie. anyways...... the stats about flash is
at...
http://www.macromedia.com/software/player_census/
carried out by an indipendant company too.
all browsers now come with flash as standard, and a good 85% of cover
disks on mags come with the flash plugin etc..... it may not be the
standard to have a flash site at the moment. but, having the plugin is
pretty much at being the standard. when the internet speeds up..... if
it ever does..... there are a fe resons why flash isnt a standard yet
etc... but i think it will become a standard.
what happened to that girl in ireland i think it was. she passed he
maths alevel at the age of 15 or something, and figured out an algerythm
or something that would speed the internet up, make it 9 times faster.
not sure the exact details but i havnt heard anything about it for 2
years. anyone know??? it was on UK news for about 2 days before they
found someone to slander for the ratings.
take care,
Rob.

I would be curious to see your stats that demonstrate the Flash is
becoming
a standard. In terms of availability to run on a machine? Or
percentage of
sites that use?
I used to argue that Flash is great and will become a standard method
for
displaying your talent on the web, now I argue it will not. Pure Flash
sites still do poorly in rankings while our old faithful Yohoo and
Amazon's
still rocket to the top. Common thread? Quick, easy downloads with
navigation that adhere's closely to the "Standard". Surfers still want
it
quick and easy. That is not likely to change for some time. Flash is
like
going to visit an amusement park; you only do it once in awhile.
Just a few thoughts.

Hmmm. Tiddly thing, eh? I'm fascinated with flash, don't get me wrong.
However, as a guy stuck in an area with no short-term prospects for
cable
modems or DSL, I value my time too greatly to patronize a site that's
full
of "flash" and sizzle unless I have good reason to believe that their
content is truly worthwhile and cannot be found elsewhere.
(And no, I don't live in the boondocks -- though I often wish I did --
it's
Lansing, the flippin' capital city of Michigan! Long story.)
