Java Applet / MIDI

Is anyone onlist familiar with Java MIDI capabilities/techniques? I
would like to be able to play not a MIDI file but actually call the
notes based on the applet, with a single instrument (probably piano).
I've been searching online and have found a couple of "packages" that
supposedly do related things, but nothing that I can get installed and
working correctly or that sound like what I want/need.

Any thoughts/suggestions welcome...
