I've heard this many times, but in the case of IE5 on Mac it's simply not 
true. I created a test page at

http://www.xs4all.nl/~ppk/tests/doctypetest.html

where I put an HTML 4.0 Strict DOCTYPE in the page and then made all kinds 
of mistakes in the code. IE5 Mac shows the page as intended and ignores the 
coding mistakes.
