I think of it as the name of the code engine that's inside the browser.

I heard it was a concatenation of 'Mosaic' and 'Godzilla', the message being
that Mozilla is hugely better than Mosaic (this was in the time that
Netscape 1 was the latest and fastest, of course).

Slurp is a robot and Netscape (compatible) probably means a
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; etc.etc.)
which means a browser that is NOT Netscape but roughly at Netscape 4 level.
IE and Opera have 'compatible' in their browser string, for instance.
