Background Image in Table

I hope this is not too basic for this list.  I would like to create a 
left-hand border with an image so that I can add text over the image. Is the 
best way to do this to create a table, then put in the image in the 
background.  If so, how would I insure that it runs top to bottom and far 
left for all resolution screens?  thanks Ronnie
