Is there a way to restrict repeating to either the horizontal or vertical
directions?

Useful for situations where you want a repeated image, such as a shadow
effect, in a table cell, but don't want it repeated if the cell is wide
enough to hold more than one.

For those interested, you can use:

TD    {background : url(image.jpg) no-repeat;}

To make a non-repeating table cell background.
